How to Make Rosemary Water for Your Hair at Home (Simple & Quick Recipe)

If you’ve ever searched “how to make rosemary water for hair,” you’ve probably noticed there are dozens of different versions out there. Some people simmer the rosemary for a few minutes, some let it steep in water for hours, and some even make something closer to a tea infusion…

So I decided to share the way I make it at home – it’s simple, doesn’t take much time, and it’s exactly the version I use myself.

Before we dive into the recipe – just a quick word on what rosemary water actually does. A lot of women use it as part of their hair and scalp care routine, because unlike oil, it’s light, doesn’t leave any greasy feeling, and it’s really easy to use every day.

If you actually came here to make rosemary oil – I wrote a full guide for that too: How to Make Natural Rosemary Oil for Hair at Home.

Okay, let’s get started.

What you’ll need:

1 cup of water (you can use more if you want a bigger batch)
A handful of fresh rosemary leaves (or a tablespoon of dried leaves)

How to make it:

Bring the water to a boil in a small pot.
Once it’s boiling, add the rosemary leaves.
Lower the heat and simmer for about 10 minutes.
Turn off the heat and let the mixture sit, covered, until it cools down completely (this is what lets the active compounds release).
Strain and store in a glass bottle or a spray bottle – whichever is easiest for you.

How long does it keep?

Since there’s no preservative in it, I recommend making a small batch each time and keeping it in the fridge for up to a week.

💆‍♀️ How I use it:

I usually spray it on after washing my hair, straight onto my hair and scalp. Sometimes in the morning too, if I’m not planning to wash my hair that day. No need to rinse it out, and you can use it like this 2-3 times a week.

Rosemary water or rosemary oil?

The truth is, you don’t have to choose just one. I like to think of them as two products that complement each other: rosemary oil gives deeper nourishment and is great for a scalp massage before washing, while rosemary water is light and easy to use every day – you just spray it on and let it dry, as simple as that. Each one does something a little different, and at home I always have both.

Honestly? My favorite part is this little bottle of rosemary water sitting in my fridge – it doesn’t ask me to make any big decision. I just spray a bit on my hair before I style it… and that’s it.
If you tried it, I’d love to hear how it worked for you, right here in the comments 💬
